nice to see you here

We all know the feeling. Waking up to find that Saturday night’s fun has turned into Sunday morning’s hangover. It has happened to the best of us once or twice, and it will probably happen once or twice more.

To get rid of this unwanted Sunday morning visitor, men and women the world over have came up with countless hangover remedies:
Drinking tons of water and taking aspirin before you go to bed…waking up to a refreshing 32oz sports drink…overloading your body with B vitamins…pancakes, eggs, coffee…pho’  and hot green tea (my personal remedy)…and the tried and true, hair of the dog.
Brunch cocktails have been around nearly as long as hangovers themselves, and though the don’t cure hangovers, they seem to help, and they come in many varieties. The queen of them all, in my meager opinion, is the Bloody Mary. It has been called ‘the world’s most complex cocktail’ because there are virtually no limits to how you concoct it. The only real necessities according to the International Bartenders Association are vodka, tomato juice, and lemon juice. A simple recipe meant to be varied and shaped to the palette of the individual consuming said cocktail.
But more often than not, if not specific when ordering, you will get something similar to the following:
In a pint glass filled with ice, mix as follows:
-2 oz choice vodka
- a few dashes of salt and pepper
- several dash Worcestershire sauce
- squeeze of fresh lemon wedge
- dash of Tabasco sauce
- fill with tomato juice
Shake well and garnish with lemon wedge, celery stalk, skewer of olives.

That is your average run-of-the-mill Bloody Mary. The complexity comes from the fact that most people use this as a basis, adding or leaving out various ingredients for their own unique recipe. Common additives are raw horseradish, various hot sauces, and pickled/raw vegetables. Now time for my preferred variation.
In a pint glass filled with ice, throw following together:
-2 oz choice vodka
- a few dashes of celery salt
- several dashes Worcestershire sauce
- squeeze of fresh lemon wedge
- a few dashes of Sriracha hot sauce, depending on taste (I like them SPICY)
- fill with tomato juice
Shake well and garnish with lemon wedge, lime wedge, large dill pickle spear, and a few dashes of black pepper.
So the next time you are at brunch, and early Mountaineer tailgate, or just for the hell of it, make yourself a Bloody Mary.
* Locally owned Morgantown businesses that serve amazing brunches include Madeline’s, The Golden Finch, and Maxwell’s.
* One of my favorite watering holes, 123 Pleasant Street has a Sunday evening Bloody Mary bar, called Sunday Bloody Sunday, featuring $4 BM’s with a large variety ingredients to add to your unique cocktail…..Stop down and let Ethan serve you one of the best Mogantown has to offer.
